Renowned musician Subpu Arumugam popularly known as Willisai Vendar passed away today (September 10) due to old age. He was 93 years old. Subpu Arumugam was born in 1928 in Chatra Pudukkulam, Tirunelveli District.

He developed spirituality and patriotism among the people during the freedom struggle through his bow song. At the age of 14, Kumaran rose to fame through a collection of poetry. Kalaiwanar N.S. He came to Chennai with the help of Krishnan. Later, he grabbed everyone’s attention with a melodious rendition of Mahatma Gandhi’s biography.

He contributed comedy parts in 19 films of Kalaiwanar and more than 60 films of Nagesh. He sang Gandhi’s story, Bharati came back, Tilak’s story, Buddha’s story etc. He also brought epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata among the people by singing Villuppattu.

In appreciation of his musical work, he was honored with the Padma Shri Award, one of the highest awards of the central government, in the year 2021. In 2005, he was awarded the Sangeetha Akademi Award by the Central Government. Kalaimamani Award was also given to Subbu Arumuga.

Many political leaders, film stars and musicians are mourning the death of Subpu Arumuga. Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan has issued a condolence note on the demise of Subpu Arumuga. Subpu Arumuga’s funeral is said to be held at his residence in KK Nagar, Chennai this evening or tomorrow morning.
